Oral History Recordings

The Quitman Sports Hall of Fame stands on the shoulders of proud traditions, including Shirley-Owens High School, Zack Huggins High School, and Quitman High School.

At Shirley Owens High-School, athletics were a beacon of hope and pride, where student athletes competed with heart, discipline, and unity as their fans and families supported them.  Administrators, coaches and teachers served as mentors and protectors, shaping generations through character and resilience that still inspire the extended community.

At Zack Huggins High School, sports added its own legacy of structure, sportsmanship, and competitive excellence. Its athletes carried the spirit of a small‑town, supported by families and supporters. The school’s traditions celebrated leadership, discipline, and the pride of wearing the school’s colors throughout the years.

When the schools united as Quitman High School in 1970, their strengths blended into a new era of excellence. Students brought different styles, different histories, and one shared determination to honor where they came from along with where they were going. Through teamwork and perseverance, they built a unified program that bridged communities and set the stage for future champions. Today, the Quitman Sports Hall of Fame honors this journey—three schools, one legacy, and a tradition of athletic unity that continues to define the community.

As you listen to these oral history recordings, we hope that you will learn from the past, embrace the present and support the future of the Quitman Sports Hall of Fame as it continues to grow.
